How to Develop a Weight Loss Plan

If you’ve ever tried and failed to lose weight, it could be possible that your plan was flawed from the start.

Unachievable goals, misguided motivation, or a simple lack of understanding of the science behind weight loss can all lead to disappointment.

Perhaps you indulged in fad diets or compared yourself too harshly with other people’s results. These pitfalls and many more can all deter people from ever achieving their long-term goals.

The most recent statistics on obesity in Australia found that two-thirds of people aged over 18 were either overweight or obese.

If you believe you fall into this majority, these concerning statistics reveal that you are not alone in your weight loss journey.

Plenty of people are looking to control their weight and reap the many rewards that a CSIRO survey linked with weight loss.

If you’re interested in feeling those benefits, this blog discusses how you can develop a plan and stick to it!

Set SMART Goals

If you’ve ever been in the business of setting goals, you may have heard of SMART goals.

This acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

For an in-depth explanation, simply Google “SMART Goals”, and you’re sure to find all the resources you need.

Simply put, SMART goals are clear and well-defined; include a metric to keep you on track; are in the realm of your personal capability; aligned with your broader lifestyle and other personal values; and set within a realistic and ambitious time-scale to provide motivation and prioritisation.

If your weight loss plan doesn’t tick each of these five boxes, you should reassess and give yourself the best chance to fulfil your goals.

Don’t Be Distracted by Fad Diets

We’re sorry to tell you this, but anything that promises “fast results” with one “miracle cure” will often be misleading and can cause you to feel even worse when it doesn’t work.

The truth is, we call it a “journey” to becoming fit and healthy because it often is just that. You may not see linear and totally predictable progression at first. You may have setbacks or moments of weakness and that’s why the support of an expert trainer is all the more helpful.

The important thing to remember is that these “cure-all” claims are designed to trick and entice those who don’t fully understand the weight loss journey.

Remember: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The surest way to lose weight and keep it off is to instil healthy habits over a long period of time while improving your attitude towards nutrition and exercise. These things can hardly be helped overnight – or within the space of one week or month, for that matter.
